Throughout the season, the CLK GTR constantly battled against the McLaren F1 GTR and the Porsche 911 GT1, outperforming them both in the driver and constructor championships. Still, the most interesting ones were two examples equipped with tartan-clad seats, a fitting throwback to the 300 SLR race car. All of them had four point seat belts, yet some CLK GTRs were racier and had the dashboard wrapped in Alcantara, while the others were upholstered in fine soft leather. When it came to finish, it differed from car to car. Patrick Ernzen ©2018 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s

Given that the vehicle had sequential manual transmission, the gear shifting commands were positioned on the backside of the AMG steering wheel, while the front side had convenient reminders in form of upwards and downwards pointing arrows.īehind the wheel and in true Mercedes-Benz fashion, the instrument cluster confidently displayed only water temperature and fuel level, while the dominating dial was a speedometer etched to 340 km/h. Darin Schnabel ©2012 Courtesy of RM Auctions As a slight touch of convenience, the vehicles featured air conditioning and a slot for a radio, provided that anyone needed any music other than the howling AMG V12. Once the wheel was reattached, the dashboard looked very much like the CLK, but the finish was a bit crude to keep the race car aura alive, yet also to avoid building costs for unnecessary features like intricate pieces of trim on the center console. So, in true race car fashion, the four-spoke AMG steering wheel was easily removable in order to enable the driver to even enter the cramped cockpit by hopping over an ultra wide sill. In the GT PSP E3 2009 trailer, the car had no censorship likely because it was copied over from GT4 the Alfa Romeo 155 2.5 V6 TI '93 and the Audi R8 Race Car '01 was also shown in the trailer uncensored. The CLK GTR was still a race car accommodated for the streets. The reasons for doing this are unknown (although licensing difficulties during GTPSP could be a reason), as both of the logos return in GT5 and stay in GT6. The large "Sonax Autopflege" logo has been replaced with indecipherable blocks, and the "Boss" logo behind the front fender has been completely removed. A more extreme form of censorship is present in the portable version of Gran Turismo. The Dekra logo on this car is censored in GT5 and GT6, probably due to licensing issues. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Mercedes 190 E 2.5 - 16 Evolution II Touring Car as it appears in GT PSP E3 2009 Trailer, the car's texture was copied over from GT4 and originally had Sonax Autopflege logo on the hood, it would be censored in the final game before being uncensored in GT5 onwards. Mercedes took the top three spots in the driver's points, making the 190E 2.5-16 See previous references the overall winner of that year's DTM series. The Evolution II showed its true power during the 1992 season, boasting 16 wins in 24 races.

Power once again went up, this time to 328 HP. In 1990, a large rear wing and wider fenders were added in the "Evolution II" edition. Displacement for the engine was increased to 2.5 liters, which accounted for 311 HP. In 1988, Mercedes-Benz made revisions to the car, and created the 190E 2.5-16. The 2.3-16 didn't achieve a single victory. Things got even worse the following year when BMW introduced the M3. But the 2.3-16 failed to produce results, being completely shut out after winning its first two races. It was powered by a Cosworth-tuned 2.3-liter DOHC inline-4. The 190E 2.3-16 racer was a homologation machine made specifically for touring car races, based on the production 190E. Part of the comeback was led by the compact 190E 2.3-16 that raced in the 1986 DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, or German Touring Car Championship). The company didn't return to big-time motorsports until the mid 1980s. And in the center of that tragedy was Mercedes-Benz.

The 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans was marred by one of the most horrific accidents in the history of motorsports. "The ultimate 190E that dominated the DTM with its small body and strong engine."
